Summary of Episode
Information from Destiny 2 furthered the story of the Awoken, with the tales of their time spent within a pocket universe known as the Distributary and the “escape” which Mara Sov orchestrated to return to Sol. Following that return, the Awoken underwent a schism – creating the groups we identify as the Earthborn and Reefborn Awoken. It was also around this point in time that Mara stepped into the midst of the war between the Last City of Humanity and the Fallen – taking out the threat of the House of Wolves before they could reach Earth to support their brethren during the battle of Twilight Gap.
Explained as a debris field in orbit within the asteroid belt of Sol, the Reef is a mysterious realm that straddles the boundary between the far edge of the Traveler’s influence and the darkness of the outer system. We do know that the foundational pieces of the structure existed pre-Golden Age, but the level at which that foundation ends and the Awoken restructuring begins is currently unknown. A matriarchal society, the Awoken of the Reef bow only to their Queen, Mara Sov – though currently this selective deference has created friction among the group due to Mara’s apparent death during the initial moments of the Taken War.
It was not until the Guardian visited that we see the relationship between the City and the Reef moving into something close to being open and friendly – a relationship which would shortly following become tested by the events of the Taken War and the rise of the Forsaken.
