Deep Stone Crypt Episode Recap

What is the Deep Stone Crypt? Is it a tower in a dream, a subroutine, a physical place, or even just a memory. The FFC crew takes on this mysterious topic in the game of Destiny in Episode 89: The Deep Stone Crypt

Death is, for us mortals, the edge of the map we know as life. But does it have to be? What if there was a way to live forever? What price would you be willing to pay for that triumph over your mortality? Would you trade your memory? Your sense of self? Your very flesh and blood?

It would appear that some found this price acceptable – some shed their bodies and even their minds to take the shape of an Exo. And as one of the most mysterious aspects in Exo history, the Deep Stone Crypt is an enigma. The little that we know for certain about this subroutine is that it is the source of the seeds which become Exo minds. But is this also a physical place? A dark tower which calls to the Exo mind…calls for them to return to their birthplace.

However, this homecoming is for some, anything but a peaceful journey. Many try to bury the dream of the tower upon a black plain – the events which they are subjected to as they try to reach their goal. But some, some will speak of the army they face along the way.

For many Exo that’s not the challenge – taking on armies, after all, was what they were designed for. The challenge is who the army is made of. There is a degree where emotion presents itself as a hindrance to a machine of war. One of those degrees is when it comes to making a choice between saving everyone you know or answering the siren song of the place of your birth…and killing all who stand in your way.

So what is the Deep Stone Crypt? Let’s break down the various parts of what it could be. First off what is a crypt? In modern times we feel that it is a place for the dead, but in the past it was used in slightly different ways. All variants on the theme of having a reverence to something or someone.
In Ghost Fragment: Legends we have :

“This is the tower where we were born. Not the Tower. Just a tower in a dream.

The tower stands on a black plain. Behind the tower is a notch in the mountains where the sun sets. The teeth of the mountain cut the sun into fractal shapes and the light that comes down at evening paints synapse shapes on the ground. Usually it’s evening when we come.”

Exo’s brains do not have natural deterioration that human minds have. We constantly are able to delete things naturally, but Exos wouldn’t be able to.
Cayde speaks of the aspect of his memories being jumbled in his journal.

“See, the reboots, they don’t wipe it all away. Not everything. And the new life-plus the Light-it does something real funny to what’s left. Amplifies it, scrambles it, reshuffles the fragments like a dealer riffling a deck of cards, putting the hands we’ve already won and lost back into play.

Most of us do what we can on our own to forget. Let the itch go unscratched.”

Why didn’t they make Exo’s better? Are they the epitome of what robotic life should be? Blue’s answer to this is multi faceted but starts out with Clovis Bray was a narcissist. Because of this he believed that he was perfect in all ways but one. Death. He wanted to conquer it. So by creating a shell for his mental self to be protected forever he breaks the final boundary. However, we do not have any proof of Clovis having become an Exo. Perhaps someday we will get that story.
Is the Deep stone crypt equivalent to a wipe? This was the final more difficult question we talked about. In most lore discussions (all that I’ve ever heard or been a part of) it is assumed that the process we know as the Deep Stone Crypt equates to being a total wipe and reset of the Exo. Technically speaking we have very little to no evidence of this. We know that the Deep Stone Crypt is the subroutine (event) that happened when the person was reborn as an exo for the first time and that they have a sort of PTSD of the event. This PTSD gives them a sort of dream/nightmare that has them murdering everyone they have ever known to get to the tower (not The Tower), the tower that has become associated with the Deep Stone Crypt through item cards as well as in the GF: Legends card itself. If the Deep Stone Crypt is not THE subroutine that wipes/resets the Exo, what is?
Of course there were many things that we talked about in the show so be sure to go and listen to it! These are just some of the big ideas we discussed.
