In astronomy, the retrograde is the period during which the planet traced the bottom half of the loop, appearing to move in the opposite direction from its orbital path.

This occurs when Earth is passing or being passed by the other planet – the appearance of retrograde motion occurs because of the relative difference in speeds. It’s when planets are closest to the observer that the most obvious or apparently retrograde motion occurs – it is an illusory side-effect of planetary proximity.
