The mark of good storytelling is the ability to draw the reader (or in this case the player) in, making them invest in the characters, empathize with their struggles, celebrate their successes, and as is in this case mourn their passing. The roadmap of Destiny and my life converge in a strange way that most other games do not. Destiny released around the time that I needed it most. In isolation, this game and its characters, particularly Cayde, reintroduced me into being able to deal with interacting with other players, cooperating in Fireteams, and making and achieving goals. Of all the cast of characters, Cayde was the first I interacted with other than my Ghost and he has always been the most interesting and dearest to my heart.
I met Cayde at a time when I most needed something like Destiny to ground me. And now that he’s gone I’m able to look back and see that I needed that pillar to ground me then but not so much now.
So to Cayde who was that pillar, my Vanguard, the one character I could always look forward to learning more about, I hope you find what you are looking for after this… whatever that is. Say hello to Ace for me.
With all my heart,
